Frequently Asked questions

Q. Some of my contracts specify different base conditions than others. Can MeterCalc accommodate my needs?

A.Yes! Through MeterCalc's flexible calculation configuration, any set of base conditions can be satisfied and the calculations will be adjusted accordingly.

Q. Just how can SonicWare help me save money?

A.When an ultrasonic meter is not properly calibrated, the reported flow rate will not match the actual flow rate. That means you may be delivering more gas than you think. Lost gas means lost revenue. SonicWare can prevent this situation by monitoring the physical properties of the gas stream. If what you measure does not match what SonicWare calculates, you may be losing money.

Q. Why should I choose PhasePro? How can it save me money?

A.PhasePro gives you the following advantages:
  • Its fast, powerful performance reduces the design time required
  • Its state-of-the-art calculations give you reliable results every time
  • Its user-friendly GUI makes it easy to use
  • It is the only leading software package designed specifically for natural gas and gas condensate systems.

Q. Which equation of state (EOS) should I use?

A.We recommend the Peng - Robinson EOS, which is a simple, popular equation that gives fast, reliable results for natural gas and gas condensate mixtures. The Peng-Robinson EOS is the default EOS in PhasePro.

Q. Can I tune my plus fraction against lab data in PhasePro?

A.Tuning the plus fraction is easy with PhasePro. After entering the information for the plus fraction, select "Tune". You can then enter your bubble and dew point data, and PhasePro will tune the plus fraction to give the best match of the phase envelope with your data for the EOS you specify. You can then save the plus fraction information for future use..

Q. For some of my meters I can get detailed composition information, but for others I can not. What do you suggest?

A.We suggest you try MeterCalc's Composition Editor, you can enter a detailed composition or simply enter the percentages of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Either way, MeterCalc can get the job done for you.

Q. Not all of our people are computer wizards. Will they have difficulty using SonicWare or MeterCalc?

A.We don't think so. Both SonicWare and MeterCalc have a specially designed user interface with pull-down and pop-up menus, which were designed to be simple and intuitive. Both software packages have context-sensitive help files that the user can consult for more information. If more help is needed, technical support is never more than a toll-free call away.

Q. What is retrograde behavior?

A.Under certain conditions, a mixture of vapor and liquid may actually form more liquid when the pressure is reduced. This is completely the opposite of the normal behavior, but it occurs frequently during the depletion of gas condensate reservoirs. Fortunately, PhasePro has been rigorously tested and proven to predict retrograde behavior accurately and reliably.

Q. My chromatographic analysis does not give me a detailed breakdown of components above hexane. Can I specify A C7+ fraction in PhasePro?

A.Yes, just select "plus fraction" from the component list, and then enter the boiling point, specific gravity, and (if known) molecular weight for the fraction.

Q. Why should I use PhasePro instead of a full process simulation package?

A.Most process simulation software is very complex, and contains a lot of information that engineers and technicians in the gas industry will never need to use. PhasePro allows you to focus on the calculations and plant design scenarios you need. PhasePro gets the job done quickly at a far less cost
